The Los Angeles County Health Department is warning residents looking to escape the early summer heat to avoid several beaches after bacteria levels were found to exceed health standards.
The rise in bacteria levels comes as Los Angeles enters full summer mode with Thursday’s summer solstice, with temperatures expected to reach triple digits in parts of Los Angeles County this weekend.
Public Health has since issued Beach Area Warnings for the following beaches:
Santa Monica Canyon Creek at Will Rogers State Beach, Topanga Canyon Beach, Sweetwater Canyon Storm Drain at Carbon Canyon Beach, Mother’s Beach, Malibu Lagoon at Surfrider Beach, Santa Monica Pier, Trancas Creek at Zuma Beach, Malibu Pier
Public health officials are urging people to avoid swimming, surfing and saltwater activities in these areas.
Public Health takes water samples once a week to test beach water quality and continually updates its recommendations. To track beach water quality in real time, visitors can check online.
Temperatures will begin to rise Friday through the weekend as the heatwave spreads across the West Coast.
