LUCKNOW: To protect crops from seasonal adverse weather conditions, the state government will launch a technology-based crop yield estimation system (YES-TECH) under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. Efforts are also underway to strengthen crop monitoring and management through the restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS), according to a state government spokesperson. “A comprehensive strategy has been devised to protect the state’s crops from seasonal adverse weather conditions, ensure crop insurance for farmers and strengthen crop inspection at the gram panchayat (local council) level,” the spokesperson said, adding that the agriculture department has now begun the process of appointing technology implementation partners (TIPs) to execute the YES-TECH initiative across the state. As a start, the department has begun the process of collecting data on rabi and kharhu crops in 75 districts of the state. “Currently, the focus is primarily on wheat and paddy crops. “The data collection will cover the years 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26 and will be consolidated based on the YES-TECH Manual 2023,” the spokesperson said. The spokesperson said emphasis has been placed on securing crops and providing insurance to farmers at the gram panchayat level in all districts. Further, the process of benefiting farmers through RWBCIS has also been initiated. Crops like banana, chilli and betel leaf as kharfi crops and tomato, pepper, green peas and mango as rabi crops have been given priority in this process. The last date for crop-wise insurance is June 30 for banana and betel leaf, July 31 for chilli, November 30 for tomato, pepper and green peas and December 15 for mango.
